Disney to build Princess Suites

In a move that was sure to happen, Disney announced the building of new Princess Suites. These suites will be located at Port Orleans Riverside, with 512 royal Guest Rooms planned to open by March 2012. It seems that Princess tianna has invited some of her royal friends for a getaway; hence, guests will notice special items left behind by various princesses.

As I've pointed out in the past, Pirates and Princesses usually go together at Walt Disney World. With the creation of Pirate Suites at the Caribbean Beach. I've already predicted that, after the completion of the heavily Princess-themed Fantasyland makeover, I would look for a Pirate-themed land to follow in the coming years. For more on that topic, see a prior blog post.

In addition, Disney also announced the addition of Health and Wellness Suites, which will be located at the Contemporary Resort. More on these suites will follow in a future posting.

Fantasyland Expansion Changes, and Goodbye to an Old Friend?

As the Fantasyland expansion continues, we always knew that changes to the master plan were possible. We also know that the parks are always changing, with new things coming and, sadly, a few old things leaving. Back in August, Disney announced that changes were being made to the original Fantasyland expansion plans.

The latest word is somewhat sad to say the least, that Snow White's Scary Adventures will be closing forever...possibly as early as February 2011. It seems like only yesterday we were saying goodbye to an old friend, Mr. Toad. I for one am always sad to see the loss of classic attractions, even when its in favor of newer ones.

Add that to the word that Disney is scrapping Pixie Hollow, as well as the Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty areas, and it seems to change the direction of the expansion altogether. While some things appear to be on the chopping block, there is also word of at least one new addition...the Seven Dwarfs Mine coaster that has been rumored off and on. If true, this would put Snow White somewhat back into the mix, but (in my opinion) not replace the classic attraction that may close. Word is that Snow White will become a princess meet & greet area for the foreseeable future.

Of course, all of this is somewhat speculation; however, it has been mentioned by several sources at this point...so we all know what that tends to mean. The Fantasyland expansion plans were probably the worst kept secret ever, even though that may have been on purpose. So what would cause a change of plans mid-stream? Could it be the continued Harry Potter effect? Rumors are also swirling that Universal is set to start on phase II of the Wizarding World, taking up the remainder of the Lost Continent land. Could it be the latest announcements from Sea World's Discovery Cove or even Busch Gardens?

While the reasons are hard to say, I do think its safe to assume there will be many more changes before the expansion is finally complete. To top it all, there have also been mumblings of changes in Adventureland, but that's another blog altogether (or perhaps a past blog from long ago).

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ The Last Week

First, many apologies for my lengthy absence. All work and no play has made Joe a lazy boy. Now you're probably wondering what I mean by "The Last Week", and it's a good question. I'm talking about that last week before your Disney vacation, the excitement, anticipation and how it all comes boiling over as the days and hours draw near. First comes the final planning, gathering things together, getting together everything to pack, and all of it makes the anticipation all the greater.

In case you're wondering, its my final week before I return to Walt Disney World for two weeks of fun and excitement. I prefer to drive, which takes me on a 14 hour journey through 6 states. Each time I cross a state line, the excitement gathers, until I cross the gate that welcomes me to the Walt Disney World Resort...then I'm home.
Just a little something to think about as your trip draws near. Nothing matches the exhilaration of seeing this for the first time!!!

Free Dining Offer Extended

Walt Disney World's free dining offer has now been extended and is available all the way into late-December. If you book a five night/six day stay at a WDW Resort, with a six day ticket, the dining plan is free. Just as the previous offer, the value resorts get the quick service plan, while moderate and deluxe resorts will get the regular dining plan.

The offer is available for the following dates: August 15-October 7, October 22-28, November 12-18, November 27-December 2, and December 10-21, 2010. You can book by calling Disney at 407-WDISNEY.

So start making those holiday plans to visit Walt Disney World in all its splendor.

Free Dining for 2010 Released

Free dining has been officially released as of this morning. The dates are for August 15 - October 2 and will offer the quick service plan for value resorts and the regular plan for moderate and deluxe resorts. Disney Visa holders can book now, while the general public can book beginning on Monday, May 3.

Free Dining in 2010? -- Update

I've been waiting to pull the trigger and actually post this, as I wanted to wait for any further details to possibly emerge.

Just a quick update on the latest rumors. My sources are now indicating that May 3 is looking strong for the release of free dining. As I mentioned before, the dates would begin on August 15 and go through the first few days of October. Also, its a good bet that it will be quick service for Values and the regular dining plan for moderate and deluxe resorts. Keep in mind though that if you stay in a value, you can still upgrade to the regular dining plan for $10 per person per day. Also, as before, we should expect Disney Visa holders to be able to book on or around May 1.

Free Dining 2010?

I thought I would post some historic dates of when the free dining promotion first opened for Disney Visa bookings. As you can see, only one out of the past five actually started bookings prior to April 1.

2005 - Booking started June 2
2006 - Booking started April 1
2007 - Booking started April 9
2008 - Booking started April 7
2009 - Booking started March 26

Also, try an experiment, go to Disney's dining reservations and try to book Cinderella's Royal Table(CRT) for....lets say....August 20 (well inside the 180 days). You'll find that you can get pretty much any time you like. In fact, the only place that's booking fast is Le Cellier (which is also one of the smallest dining establishments in all of Disney). Given the popularity of CRT and the speculation of free dining, why would it still be wide open, especially with the potential of being free?

When I booked my ADRs for the first two weeks of September, I got everything I wanted, including Le Cellier on two nights, as well as CRT.

So does these low bookings give insight into the booking levels for the fall? I think it very well might. If that's the case, it certainly makes sense to do a promo of some kind, wouldn't you think?

A Very Merry Christmas Wish

I feel like its been such a long time since I've written a blog. I've been very busy lately, preparing several things I'll share with all of you soon. For now, I just want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. May the magic of the holiday season warm your hearts on even the coldest of winter days.

I would also like to share a clip from the Walt Disney World Christmas Special. I think this song sums it up so well. There's no reason to wait for Christmas to share the love and magic with those around you when you can do it every day of the year. Citizens of Hollywood

Today we visit the Citizens of Hollywood, formerly known as the Streetmosphere characters at Disney's Hollywood Studios. During my birthday trip, I was fortunate enough to catch all the actors in full force on Hollywood Boulevard. With characters, such as Dorma Nesmond, Minerva Limpwhistle, Judy Pututy (Tinseltown Cutie) and many others, they love to interact with guests as they stroll down Hollywood Boulevard.

I was lucky enough to see quite a few and have included a few pictures and even a video below. Since I was wearing my birthday pin, I got quite a bit of attention as well. Here's a tip, these characters love the camera and love video cameras even more. If you point a video camera at one of them, get ready for a show, as you'll see below.

Next time you find yourself at the Studios, don't be in a rush to get to an attraction. Many people pass right by these characters without a thought, and in doing so, miss out on a real treat. I'll always remember some of the things said to me by Dorma Nesmond or Judy and Minerva and the pictures I got were absolutely priceless. Next trip, be sure to stop and say hi...and have your camera handy. I hope you enjoy my video below as much as I enjoyed making those priceless memories. Predictions for the Future

So much has happened over the past few months that it seems difficult to absorb it all. Though most of the announcements were long standing rumors, it was nice to finally hear some confirmation. But what happens next? What lies around the next corner?

I wanted to take the time to actually list some of my predictions, along with the reasoning behind them. I tend to look at what they're doing and put two and two together to fill in the holes. Some of these may be announced in a few years, while others may be long term. Finally, these are in no particular order of when I think they could or would happen.

1. Radiator Springs - Let's cut to the chase right off the bat, Radiator Springs will come to Disney's Hollywood Studios. Allow me to put it all together for you. Pixar Street will eventually extend all the way to New York Street, changing the Honey I Shrunk the Kids set into A Bug's Life. Next comes the long rumored Monster's Inc. coaster next door to Toy Story Mania. After that comes the removal of the Backlot Tour (which isn't much of a tour these days) and a whole lot of real estate for Florida's incarnation of Radiator Springs. They could even integrate Catastrophe Canyon into this attraction since the theming is essentially the same. After all, every major attraction at California's Adventure has either come from or made its way to Walt Disney World. Don't think for one second that something this major will be left in the wings for long.

2. World Showcase Expansion - Ok, as I've said before, Future World is updated, they've refurbed nearly every pavilion so far. World Showcase hasn't seen an update for many years and there's plenty of land back there to do many things. This would be a good way to pull crowds around World Showcase Lagoon and disperse them throughout the park. There are a couple of possibilities here that were planned but never built, yet seem to be the most likely. Switzerland is my dream country, with its charming Swiss village and Matterhorn style coaster. This would be a great visual in the back of the park, but some feel it would be too close to Expedition Everest.

The second possibility, and one surfacing in more and more rumors, is Russia. This pavilion would be stunning, surrounded by red brick walls, opening into a recreation of Red Square, with a very impressive recreation of St. Basil's Cathedral. Planned attractions included 'Russia - The Bells of Change', a theatrical experience combining Audio-Animatronic characters, animated sets, film, and a live actor to tell the story of this vast country. There was also a ride-through attraction inspired by one of Russia's best loved folk tales, 'Ivan and the Magic Pike.'

3. Adventureland becomes Tortuga - This would completely tie in the expansion at the Magic Kingdom. For so long they have built on two things, Princesses and Pirates. First, we have the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in Fantasyland and Pirate's League in Adventureland. Then comes the confirmation of the large expansion of Fantasyland into nearly being an entire land of Princesses. Is it any stretch of the imagination to next see Adventureland become Tortuga? The hint has even been dropped a few years ago with the above concept art, yet no explanation of any kind. Think of what could happen here. How about a Black Pearl that you could board and explore? How about a character dining experience with Capt. Jack and the other Pirates? So far we've seen similar happenings with Pirates and Princesses, I think the trend will continue.

4. Walt Disney World's Fifth Gate - I've blogged on this before as well, so I'll only touch on it. It's real simple, DisneySea without a doubt. This park has all the makings of a great addition in Walt Disney World and has proven itself on the world stage as one of the most desired parks to visit. Another park wouldn't likely happen for many years, but it will eventually happen and you have to think this is on their short list.

5. Beastly Kingdom - Ok folks, if they weren't still planning on building this, then why are there still mythical creatures on all of the Animal Kingdom signage? This was always to be the park's second phase, and has yet to happen. What are we talking about here? How about Dragon Tower, a ruined castle home to a greedy fire-breathing dragon, where guests board a thrilling roller coaster ride through the castle ruins, climaxing by coming face to face with the evil dragon himself. How about Quest of the Unicorn, sending guests through a maze of medieval mythological creatures to seek the hidden grotto of the unicorn. How about Fantasia Gardens, a musical boat ride through animal scenes from Disney's animated classic, Fantasia. Does this sound like fun?

Doesn't the sheer possibility of these things just make you want to jump up and down? Each make sense in their own way and, while it would take many years to do them all, I think you'll agree there's plenty of plans on the drawing boards to keep Imagineers busy for a long time to come. I believe that the latest announcements are just the beginning of a lot of new things to come at Walt Disney World. We could be seeing the beginning of another "Disney Decade"....or beyond.

A Birthday To Beat All Birthdays

This year is all about celebrating at Walt Disney World, so I took them up on the offer and spent my birthday at the happiest place on earth. It was everything it was made out to be, from the little surprises to all the people who wished me happy birthday along the way. I managed to get a room at the Dolphin over my birthday, which got me a free night, plus I took advantage of the free ticket to Epcot as well.

My day began with breakfast at Cape May in the Beach Club. All the characters were great and I got my happy birthday cupcake as well. But the week had only just begun (yes, I had not a single day but an entire birthday week).

I spent a very nice day at Epcot where I did a passport around World Showcase; I call it my birthday card from around the world. I was treated to several small surprises along the way as well. For example, as I watched the band perform in Mexico, one of the members asked me to come up with them and they sang happy birthday (video clip is posted to my youtube page).

Upon returning to the Dolphin, I was treated with a birthday card and champagne, courtesy of the resort, what a nice touch. This would also be my last night in the Dolphin before moving over to Pop Century for my actual 7-night package, and just the beginning of a wonderful week.

On the first day of my package, I had tea at the Grand Floridian, where the manager presented me with a birthday card signed by the entire staff. Wow, this was now my second card of many that I would receive. Sitting there sipping tea in this fancy setting was very enjoyable and I highly recommend it to anyone to try at least once.

It seemed that everywhere I went, someone would wish me a happy birthday, both castmembers and guests alike. Even people in the parades would yell happy birthday as they walked past. One highlight was when I was watching Jim the piano man playing ragtime and he cut into a happy birthday tune for me, it definitely made me smile.

Below are more pictures of a very nice card, a very crazy guy, and one of many happy birthday cupcakes I received at various dinners at Walt Disney World. If you haven't been on your birthday, you should make it a point to do so if possible. It will be one of the most memorable birthdays of your lifetime.

Disney to Buy Marvel

In a surprise move this morning, the Walt Disney Company announced that it has agreed to purchase Marvel Entertainment for around $4 Billion. Marvel holds rights to around 5,000 super hero characters, including Spiderman, the X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and Thor.

Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said "We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation".

As a personal observation, remember that Universal's Islands of Adventure currently has an entire land themed to Marvel. What will ultimately happen to this land? The addition of Marvel gives Disney a massive avenue of possibilities. Is this the beginning of something big at any of the theme parks?

Update: Universal does indeed hold the rights to exclusive use of the characters east of the Mississippi as long as their attractions are operating. However, with Disney throwing their identity onto Marvel, one has to wonder if Universal will be in a pickle. One one hand, yes they can keep their attractions, but on the other hand, people may begin to associate them with Disney. That would be a blow to Universal's very identity and they may make the decision to push back from the table and re-brand. Again, this is just a personal observation.

Off To My Laughin' Place!!!

Tomorrow I'm off to my laughin' place, as I venture to Walt Disney World for 10 days of fun and relaxation. When I return, I shall have plenty of new photos and topics to cover. I'll be doing many exciting new things and I'm looking forward to them all.

Tying It All Together ~ Magic Kingdom's Grand Plan?

As I’ve watched things that have happened at the Magic Kingdom over the past couple of years, as well as hearing the many dozens of rumors during the same timeframe, I’ve put together what I think could be a grand plan. This plan makes even more sense to me as Disney will soon be gearing up to go head-to-head with Universal's Harry Potter land in the very near future. Please keep in mind that these are only my thoughts based on what I’ve seen and heard…predictions if you will. Additionally, the concept art is just for illustrative purposes and wasn’t necessarily created for this particular plan.

A few years back, a couple of things happened at Cinderella’s Castle. First, King Stefan’s Banquet Hall became Cinderella’s Royal Table; infused with Princesses, it became the most sought after dining experience in all of Walt Disney World. Then the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique was added, where all little girls could become a princess. If you recall the recently “leaked” Fantasyland blueprints, you’ll notice that it is divided into sections for all the Princesses. Were the Princess additions at the castle just the beginning of what will soon become an entire land of Princesses? While I believe it’s a distinct possibility, I think this is only half of the story.

You’ll also notice in the blueprints that there are now TWO Dumbo rides sitting side by side. Where will they get the second Dumbo? Well, how about the Magic Carpet ride from Adventureland? This ride has to be removed from Adventureland for the second phase to become reality.

In the 2006 Annual Report, Disney showed a few pieces of concept art without explaination. One is a Pirate-Themed Land that has yet to be explained to this day. Does anyone remember the old Tortuga rumors? Perhaps Adventureland could be re-themed as Pirates just as Fantasyland may become re-themed as Princesses. What’s the connection you ask? Well how about the recent addition of the Pirate’s League, where all little boys can become a pirate (that sounds so familiar doesn’t it), as well as a new permanent spot for Captain Jack Sparrow recently added directly across. Could the beginnings of a transformation already be taking place?

Have a close look at the concept art and you’ll see a tie in with yet another old rumor. As part Adventureland’s re-theme into Pirates, we could see the removal of the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, and its replacement with The Black Pearl. Throw in the old Tortuga Character Dining rumor and the transformation is complete.

One additional point of fact is that a couple years ago Scott Trowbridge was hired as VP for Creative Research and Development. Trowbridge was formerly VP of Universal's Creative Studios, Senior Show Producer for the Spider-Man attraction, and working on Harry Potter at the time of his move to WDI. Makes you wonder what this man’s been working on at WDI over the past couple of years doesn’t it? Could it be his job to top Harry Potter?

With these two lands re-themed, it ties together yet another recent item…the Pirate & Princess Party. The push for Pirates and Princesses has been great over the past couple of years; could this be why? Have they been testing the waters for a possible re-theme all along? Is this and this alone what could go against Harry Potter? No, I think this is but one plan for one park. I feel very strongly that, over the next year or so, we’ll be hearing some announcements not only for Magic Kingdom, but for at least one of the other parks as well. Whether it’s the Beastly Kingdom at Animal Kingdom that was planned but never built, or something else, time will tell. I believe we’re going to see a lot of wonderful things happening over the next few years, all thanks to the world of Harry Potter

Oh, it could also be a new ride I predict at the Disney-Hollywood Studios…but I’ll save that for the next blog item. Until then, here’s to the dreamers….I hope they’re dreaming big!!!

Fantasyland Blueprints Leaked

A few days ago, some blueprints were "leaked" by someone at Disney that shows a massive expansion of Fantasyland. Not only does it include the Little Mermaid attraction I mentioned in another blog, but so much more.

First, some points of reference. In the image below (click to enlarge), look for the carousel and teacups along the bottom of the image. The area between these two attractions, that run along the very bottom of the image, are the current Snow White and Winnie the Pooh rides. You can also see a portion of the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway to the right of the teacups, and the Barnstormer coaster at far-right-center.

After studying these blueprints for a while, I noticed a few things. First, Toontown is basically gone, swallowed up by the Fantasyland expansion. Second, I noticed something was missing....the Dumbo attraction. If you look to the top right corner however, you'll notice that Dumbo isn't missing, but moved. In fact, there are TWO Dumbo attractions sitting side by side in what once was Toontown. Additionally, where Ariel's Grotto currently sits is now a Beauty and the Beast themed area as well, with what looks like a restaurant called "Be Our Guest". Finally, you'll notice an enlarged Pixie Hollow, as well as sections for Cinderella and Aurora...with small attractions/greeting areas of their own.

Could this be Disney's answer to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? It seems quite obvious that Disney will respond in some form or fashion once Universal opens its new Potter themed land. I've always thought that Disney would wait until after Universal opened its new land before taking any action of their own....which makes perfect sense if you think about it. It not only allows Disney to gauge the impact of the Harry Potter attractions, but also gives them a chance to see it for themselves, and know what they're up against.

So, for now, have a close look at these blueprints, there's lots going on in there and it gives a good idea at what could be happening very very soon in a land with plenty of room for much needed expansion. Its also important to note that Disney often changes and tweaks their plans, sometimes even during construction, so expect many changes when/if construction begins.

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ The Real Characters

As my trip to Walt Disney World draws closer, I am reminded of many fun times with the characters. This time, however, when I say characters I'm not referring to Mickey and friends....but the "real characters," as in the Cast Members.

The Cast Members often provide lasting memories by some of the fun things they do. A good way to remember some of these great times is by having a photo taken with them. Whether it be a fun time in the front car of a monorail, at one of the nations at World Showcase, or an encounter with someone such as Art the Greeter...ask them for a photo and they'll usually be more than happy.

I've found that many of the CM's really enjoy adding that extra piece of magic to your vacation experience and looking back at some of the photos I've taken with them really brings back happy memories for me. Many of the CM's stay in character as well. For example, get a photo with someone at the Tower of Terror or Haunted Mansion and make sure you have a gloomy look on your face, because they usually will as well.

So the next time you're at Walt Disney World, don't forget some of the "real characters" that make your trip even more fun. Stop and ask for a photo. They'll be happy that you asked and you'll have a memory of that moment to last a lifetime!!!

Thoughts & Prayers ~ Disney Monorail Accident

At around 2am two Walt Disney World Monorail trains collided, killing a Castmember who was driving one of them. This is a very sad story and I wish to send my thoughts and prayers to the Castmember's family. No one else was hurt in this accident and the monorail system remains shut down today pending an investigation into the cause of the crash. The Monorails involved were Pink and Purple. Seven others were checked by paramedics and released, with no other injuries reported.

It is worth noting that this is the first such incident to ever occur on the entire monorail system, making it one of the safest forms of transportation on the planet. Once the cause has been determined, one can bet that Disney will put many more safeguards in place to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Always Remember...

As I write this, I mark the 10th anniversary of the sudden passing of my Father. Disney World was our world and we shared many special memories there. Since his passing, I've continued to make memories each time I visit, as I remember him the best way I know how...by continuing the fun that we always enjoyed together.

He always taught me to enjoy life, have fun and not worry about the little things. We shared many one-of-a-kind moments at Walt Disney World that could never be replicated. When I'm at Walt Disney World, I can always feel him walking by my side, and how he would've loved some of the new attractions and the many adventures I've had over the past 10 years.

Here's to you Dad...I shall ALWAYS remember!!!

A Look Back ~ Skyway

One attraction that I remember with fondness was a ride that had no anamatronics or even much of a theme. I'm talking about the Skyway. I can remember riding this many times as we would soar over Fantasyland and into Tomorrowland...or vice versa.

The Skyway was one of the attractions at the Magic Kingdom when the park first opened in 1971. It was an aerial tram type ride that took visitors between the Fantasyland and TomorrowLand. The Skyway passed over Cinderella's Golden Carousel, as well as the Grand Prix Speedway.

The ride gave excellent views from above the park and was a smooth, leisurely ride that lasted around 5 minutes each way. One interesting feature was the 90 degree turn into Tomorrowland.

This was a ride that I always loved as a child as well, since it gave a sensation of flight. You could see out over the Seven Seas Lagoon and even see Spaceship Earth far off in the distance.

Sadly, the Skyway at the Magic Kingdom was removed in 1999. Currently, the Tomorrowland station is closed and used for storage, while the Fantasyland station is used for stroller parking. It still lives on however, in the form of the millions of photos that guests took over the years. I hope you enjoy a couple of photos I took many years ago. In face, you can even see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was also still operating at the time....but that is another blog topic altogether.

Magic Kingdom's Next E-Ticket?

Splash Mountain was the last E-Ticket ride to open at the Magic Kingdom. Since that time, many have opened at Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Since the closing of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, there has been a large piece of property sitting vacant in Fantasyland. As the economy improves, you can bet the folks at WDI will be ready to begin the next adventure for the Magic Kingdom. This has been long rumored, but I believe the time is drawing near.

What's the ride you ask? None other than Walt Disney World's incarnation of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Adventure. It is the perfect fit, in the perfect spot, in a park that's long overdue for a major E-Ticket attraction.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Adventure is a $100 million attraction being built at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim. The attraction will transport guests through the under sea world of The Little Mermaid, with Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder, King Triton, and Ursula. The ride will be an Omnimover like in The Haunted Mansion and many other rides on property.

Will this happen? Only time will tell; however, I think you'll agree that the piece of land is far too valuable to sit vacant for much longer. This attraction would tie in with the existing Ariel's Grotto and be a perfect fit for the large void left vacant with the exit of 20,000 Leagues. The last E-Ticket ride installed at California Adventure was Toy Story Mania, which ended up at Disney's Hollywood Studios in short time. So keep your eyes on this one folks...and your fingers crossed!!!

Note (6/12/09): I just noticed some rumblings about this attaction on a couple other sites. At the time of writting, I had not yet seen them. Perhaps this is further along than many people think, or everyone is having some wishful thoughts of the future.

D23 Day One Charter Member Gift

When D23 first began, there were a lot of people complained about the purpose of D23. I had mentioned in a few posts that D23 could, should and may give a little something special to those of us who had faith in what D23 would become, and joined on Day 1.

Yesterday, my prediction came true as I received a small unmarked envelope. Inside was a letter from Steven Clark, along with a very special pin. The pin is of Jiminy Cricket and titled "Day One Charter Member March 10, 2009". Its about 2.5 inches wide and very stunning...see photo below.

Walt Disney once said that Disneyland would never be finished as long as there was imagination left in the world. I feel that the D23 team has taken this to heart, as they continue to offer new and exciting perks to D23 members.

I've always been taught that those who get in on the ground floor are often rewarded in some way...D23 had been no exception. I would like to give my gratitude to everyone at D23 for keeping Walt's vision alive and sharing that vision with us all.

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Halloween Party

"I put a spell on you, and now you're mine, you can't stop the things I do, now I ain't lyin'..." Ah the sights and sounds of Halloween. Wait, why would I write about Halloween in May? Simple, tickets for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party are on sale at this time. I've so often heard from people that they were thinking of attending, but couldn't decide. This is a party that's definitely worth attending, so buy your tickets early to make sure you get the date you want.

I've been twice and had fun both times. One time it was completely rained out, but we did not fear the rain. We made the decision to "step out" and, upon getting soaked, walked from ride to ride and had the time of our lives. So, even in the rain, this party was a blast!!!

I especially enjoy the two main events, Hallowishes and the Boo To You Parade. Just prior to the parade, there's a special ride of the Headless Horseman, which is a sight to see. I often hear people ask about the quote that plays just prior to his appearance, so I thought I would share it with you. To me, this quote sets the mood for the evening quote well.

"I've a tale to tell I hope you'll follow,
of a legend born in Sleepy Hollow.
A Headless Horseman rode through the night,
on a great black steed with a pumpkin bright.
It's said he's tired of his flaming top,
so he's looking for a head to swap.
Beware, he may soon be in sight.
The Headless Horseman rides tonight!"

Hallowishes is a fireworks show like you've never seen. At times, there are literally fireworks exploding 360 degrees around you, which is truly amazing. The music for Hallowishes is a treat in and of itself.

But that's not all, don't forget about all of the trick or treat stations, where you'll get plenty of candy during the evening. Also, there are more characters out during this party than I've ever seen at any other time!!! Bring your cameras and be sure to get plenty of pictures, because some of the characters are quite rare. So if you're at Walt Disney World at the right time, be sure to attend Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

The dates for 2009 are September 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29,October 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31 and November 1. Ticket prices are $62.84 for Adults and $56.45 for Children. If you purchase in advance, the tickets are $55.38 for Adults and $48.99 for Children.(discount not available Oct 9, 15, 23, 31). Also, on Halloween night, the tickets will run $68.16 for Adults and $61.77 for Children. There are also annual pass and DVC discounts as well.

See you on Halloween....hurry baaaaack, hurry baaaaack, be sure to bring your death certificate...ha ha ha ha!!!!

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Haunted Mansion

"When hinges creak in doorless chambers and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candles flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight."

The Haunted Mansion has been a favorite since its opening. Where else can you meet 999 happy haunts, and even take one home with you in the end. The recent refurb has only made this classic attraction even better.

TIP: Don't forget to look at picture over the fireplace changing as you are entering the room. You will see it slowly change into something sinister. A lot of folks miss this detail as they make their way into one of the two stretching rooms. I thought I would share a few photos of a recent journey. These were taken by myself and my friend Rob Farley. I hope you enjoy them.

The first photo was taken during the 2008 Not So Scary Halloween Party. I love the added effects for this event.

This photo is a classic scene of a piano playing a ghostly tune. I just love this everytime I see it, and it never seems to get old.

This is one of the new scenes added in a recent refurb. This is rich with detail and was a welcome addition to a classic attraction.

Finally, a classic photo. Does anyone know what this is? This is the infamous "ring" in the cement at the exit. They have since removed it, as it was never really part of the story. It was holder for a pole of some sort. Over time, fans created a story around "the ring", as it told of the bride who tossed it out the window of the mansion and it lies there to this day. This is one of those little things that fans can take and create their own storyline, which is one of the things that makes Walt Disney World so fantastic.

I always enjoy riding this attraction many times during my trips to Walt Disney World. I hope you find the Haunted Mansion as fascinating as I do and always look for new and interesting details each time you ride.

Birthday Trip

I thought I would post a quick update on my Birthday Trip. I was able to get all the dining I wanted at the times I wanted.

Friday - Crystal Palace Dinner

Yes, I know, I got Le Cellier twice. The list reads like an "all that's holy and good in the world" of restaurants at Walt Disney World. For lunch, I'm thinking along the lines of Sunshine Seasons, Columbia Harbor House, Flame Tree BBQ and even Beaches & Cream (on my birthday of course).

Just wanted to bring everyone up to speed. It is shaping up to be a trip, as it always can be with just a little planning ahead. Maybe I'll even see a few of you guys down there...just look for the guy with the big smile on his face!!!

Streetmosphere

As you walk the streets inside the parks, from time to time you'll discover some lively characters. Not the standard Disney characters, mind you, these guys are commonly referred to as Streetmosphere performers. Most can be found at Disney's Hollywood Studios on Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards throughout the day. However, there are other places where you can find them from time to time as well.

The Studio performers are generally the most prevalent. They can include characters such as directors, starlets, policemen, cleaning ladies, etc... They really bring the "old Hollywood" feel to life as they make their way up and down the streets.

Another location for the Streetmosphere characters is Main Street USA. True, the Dapper Dans could technically be included in this mix; however, they're not the only ones. You'll find folks like the Mayor of Main Street and some other timely characters roaming as well.

Epcot's World Showcase is also a great place to spot different characters. From the costumed guys at Italy to different street performers in places such as the United Kingdom, they appear throughout the day.

So the next time you see one of these characters walking the streets and getting passers by to join in their hi jinx, stop for a bit and watch. The Streetmosphere is one of those little things that many people miss...but those that stop to take it in are often pleasantly surprised. I hope you're all able to see a few of these characters on your next vacation to Walt Disney World. If you do, I promise you'll walk away with a smile on your face and a few happy memories.

Something Unique ~ My Mickey Watch

I wanted to share something rather unique that I have in my collection. Most of my friends know that I'm a fan of watches (and pens, but that's another story). A couple years ago, Disney offered a remake of a vintage Mickey Mouse watch from the 1930s for those who signed up for a Disney Visa. I already had a Visa (since day 1), so a quick call was made to my Mother to let her know that this was a good time for her to sign up.

This watch is a very nice, manual wind beauty and comes in its own vintage tin. I don't wear this particular watch, but I do wind it on occasion to keep everything working smoothly. Another interesting trait is the see-through case back. Turning the watch over allows you to see its inner-workings...very nice feature.

This watch was only available to Disney stockholders who signed up for the Disney Visa at the time. I've not seen or heard much about it since, but I'm sure a few folks jumped on the deal.

I just thought I would share this unique item with all of you. I really enjoy it and will keep it as one of the neatest items in my collection. If any of you have this, please let me know...I would be curious to see how many others were able to get one.

Four Years Ago Today ~ Two Great Attractions

Today we celebrate the openings of two great attractions that opened 4-years ago, Soarin' and The Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show. These attractions were brought from other Disney parks for the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Soarin' is a transplant from Disney's California Adventure and takes guests on a hang-gliding experience over California, complete with wind in your hair and all of the wonderful scents along the way. I love this ride, its so realistic and free as you seem to float in open space. As expected, lines for Soarin' can be quite long, and its well worth the wait...but a fastpass is the best option here. Soarin' is located inside The Land pavilion at Epcot, which now houses multiple attractions inside one pavilion. Grab that fastpass, go for a ride on "Living with the Land", have a meal at Sunshine Seasons and then off for your flight over California.

The Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show comes to us all the way from Disneyland Paris. This is the ultimate automobile stunt show and also features motorcycles and jet ski chases as well. Cameras follow the action, which is projected on giant screens to give the appearance of a live film shoot. The show is full of excitement from beginning to end, with lots of fire, explosions, near-miss chases and jumps. This show is located at Disney's Hollywood Studios and took the place of Residential Street on the backlot. This is a show that should not be missed...edge of your seat excitement all the way.

So I wish a happy 4th to these two attractions. May they have many more years to follow, as they entertain millions of guests each year!!!

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Le Cellier

Le Cellier is one of my most favorite places to dine at Walt Disney World. In fact, its so good I always try to eat there twice during my trip. Le Cellier is located below the Chateau in the Canada Pavilion at Epcot, and is themed as the wine cellar. This restaurant is a very intimate dining experience with dim ambient lighting and a cozy atmosphere....perfect for everything from a gathering of friends, to a romantic honeymoon dinner.

The meal starts off with something I adore...the breadsticks, particularly the soft pretzel breadsticks. I've been known to eat several of them at one sitting and even take a few out the door when I leave. The signature dish is the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup, and it does not disappoint. Some people eat here just for the soup, but that's not all that Le Cellier is famous for. This is a steakhouse, and a very good one at that. The steaks are cooked to perfection, very juicy and full of flavor.

For dessert, the options are still endless. I prefer the Chocolate Whiskey Cake, but there is also a Maple Creme Brulee, Sorbet that will make you beg for more, Cheesecake, Apple-Rhubarb Crumble and Chocolate "Moose" (Chocolate Mousse rolled in Toasted Chocolate Crumbs with Maple Leaf Antlers).

Whatever you order here, you simply can't go wrong...but be warned, Le Cellier is also one of the smallest dining locations at Walt Disney World and also books quite fast as well. If you want to dine here, plan ahead or you'll never get in. Le Cellier is definitely one of my favorite things!!!

Happy Birthday Disney-MGM Studios

On May 1, 1989, the Disney-MGM Studios opened for the world to see. Originally, it was never even supposed to be a theme park at all, but only a single attraction at Epcot (which ended up becoming the Great Movie Ride). After Universal Studios announced they were building a park in Orlando, the race was on to see who could open first. The Disney-MGM Studios opened more than a year before Universal Studios.

The park was actually two sections, with one side being a theme park (mainly Hollywood Blvd and Echo Lake) and the other being a production center. Its important to keep in mind that there were only five attractions when the park opened; The Great Movie Ride, Backstage Studio Tour, Monster Sound Show, Superstar Television and The Magic of Disney Animation. The Backstage Studio Tour alone lasted a whopping two-hours covering the production center, soundstages and backlot.

As you can see from the map, there were a lot of attractions that did not exist at the time of opening. There was no Sunset Blvd, no Rockin' Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror or Fantasmic. There was no Muppets, no Star Tours and no Pixar Street. Guests couldn't walk on the New York set nor could they go down what is currently Pixar Street (no walking in any of the purple areas on the map). Yes, this park was small, very small.

Through the years, the park gradually grew and grew into what it is today. I first went in December, 1989 and by that time the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular had opened...I even got to do a soft-preview of Star Tours. We later would see Muppet-Vision 3D as well as some very thrilling rides, such as the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster with Aerosmith (how 'bout some backstage passes).

Of course, today its known as Disney's Hollywood Studios...but to those of us who remember, it will always be the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park. Happy 20th to the Disney-MGM Studios, and may the next 20 years be just as exciting as the first!!!

All Star Sports Resort ~ 15 Years Old

Fifteen years ago today, a new resort opened at Walt Disney World that forever changed the dynamics of on-site resorts. The All Star Sports Resort opened as the least expensive Disney Resort ever, the Value Resort was born.

Since that time, 3 additional Value Resorts have opened, as they have become some of the most popular resort choices at Walt Disney World. The All Star Sports Resort has five themed sections of rooms; surfing, football, tennis, baseball, and basketball. There are also two pools as well, which are themed as surfing and baseball.

Sitting on 90 acres, the All Star Sports Resort has 1,920 rooms, which are 260 square feet each, a little smaller than moderate resort rooms. A standard room has either two double beds or a king bed, and all the expected amenities (nightstand, table and chairs, TV, dresser, etc...). The bathrooms have a single sink as opposed to some of the higher priced resorts that have two.

Since the opening of the All Star Sports Resort, we have seen the addition of the All Star Music and Movies Resorts, as well as the Pop Century Classic Years Resort. In the future, we can also expect to see the Pop Century Legendary Years as well, as the popularity of the Value Resorts continues to grow. But for now, I'll just say happy anniversary to the Resort that started it all...All Star Sports that is.

Note: Surfs Up or Touchdown buildings are closest to the food court and bus stop, the Hoops Hotel or Center Court are more quiet.

D23 ~ I'm A Fan

I was pleasantly surprised to find the newest issue of Disney Twenty-Three magazine waiting for me when I got home today. Inside was something special, yet another gift. The magazine celebrates 75 years of Donald Duck (my favorite) and has a section describing the changes being made at Disney's California Adventure...along with lots of concept art. That park is going to be very nice and I can't wait to see how the Cars attraction turns out.

On to the gift, a reproduction of a 1955 souvenir from Disneyland. Its a fan and its just for D23 members from the Walt Disney Archives Collection. As you can see in the photos, the fan is separated into five "blades" that you hook together to form the fan. Its two sided as well. On one side is Sleeping Beauty Castle, Pirate Ship, Mark Twain River Boat, Astrojet and the Canal Boat Ride. On the reverse side is the Tropical River Ride, Stage Coach Ride, Skyway, Clock of the World and Casey Jr. Ride.

Now it makes me wonder if they will continue to give little gifts from the Archives Collection in the future. Oh the anticipation...now I really do feel like I'm 23!!!

A Different Perspective

Looking at this first photo, do you know where its from? I always tell everyone visiting Walt Disney World to be sure and look up, down, all around to truly notice the details that are everywhere. There are so many details that often go unnoticed, and finding them can be a lot of fun. So always be sure and look around.

I enjoy looking at things differently and taking photos things from a different perspective. Have a look at the next photo, wow that thing sure was heavy...I guess you could say I had the whole world in my hand. That was such a fun photo to take and gets a lot of laughs from all who view it. Everyone has a picture of Spaceship Earth, but how many have a picture like this?

Have any of you ever been inside the Sir Mickey's shop in Fantasyland just behind the castle? If so, surely you've noticed this? Its the Giant lifting up the roof and having a peek inside. So many people, myself included, have been in that shop so many times and never noticed that little detail. Like I said, always look up.

These are just a few examples of some interesting things all around Walt Disney World. There are so many details, one could write a book (gee, that sounds like a good idea). So next time you're visiting Walt Disney World, see how many things you can find that always went unnoticed on previous trips. Look for the details and ALWAYS look up.

Oh by the way, did you figure out where the first picture was from yet? Give up? Its actually the inside of the entrance to the Enchanted Tiki Room. How many of you have actually looked up as you entered? I bet you'll look up next time.

A Look Back ~ Tickets

Lately, I've discovered some very old items while rummaging through my things. I thought I would show a little evolution of sorts. Some folks say I have quite a few Keys to the World, and who am I to argue that? I thought it would be fun to post a few older tickets from different times...back before I stayed on-property (perish the thought). One thing you'll notice is the evolution in pricing, oh how I would like to still get in for those prices.

First, we'll go all the way back to the old ticket books. See, before the one-price ticket, Disney use to charge a small entry fee to the park and each ride took tickets. You received one ticket book upon entry and could purchase more as you desired. The books were sorted by letters A-E, with the quality and popularity of the ride determining the letter. If you click on the photo, you can see some of the "C-Ticket" attractions. Obviously, the E-Ticket rides were the big ones like Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc...now you know where the term comes from.

Next we'll jump to 1989 and my trip to the newly opened Disney-MGM Studios. The ticket cost $29.00 and did you catch that parking pass? Yup, $3.00 to park your car, that's a quarter of what it costs today...but we all stay at Disney Resorts, so who needs to pay for parking right?

Finally, check out the 1993 tickets. Now we're up to $36.00, but since I went on Spring Break, I got a special ticket for only $24.00. Parking was up to $4.00...still seems like a bargain doesn't it?

Looking back, how many of you would love to be able to get in the parks for some of those prices? I've kept these tickets safe over the years, as they were from trips with my Father...mementos I'll forever cherish. Each one holds memories, laughs and lots of good times. So how many of you have some old tickets stashed away? Dig them out...see how much they cost...look at the dates and see what memories instantly pops into your head. As always, Enjoy the Magic!!!

The 14-Hour Drive

So that's how long it takes, 14 hours from my home to Walt Disney World. I can already hear you saying, why don't I fly? Well you see, my family always drove to Florida and it became sort of a tradition. Later, when my Dad and I went to Walt Disney World, we drove as well.

I think driving is exciting and fun. There are so many things you miss if you fly into Florida as opposed to driving. One is the Florida welcome center, which I always make sure I stop by each time I travel to Florida. In addition to stocking up on the latest brochures from Disney and many other places of interest, they also welcome you with a cup of orange juice. I always feel like my trip has officially begun once I have that little cup of juice.

I also enjoy stopping along the way at places like Daytona Beach to pick up some saltwater taffy...Zenos is my favorite. From time to time, I even stay a night or two at the beach before I begin my Disney trip...a pre-show if you will. I love seeing the interstate exit signs for Epcot and Downtown Disney...then driving through the main gate of Walt Disney World...what a thrill.

On the return trip, I often find my car is packed to the ceiling with souvenirs. If I ever flew, I would likely have to ship all of my goodies back home, as there would be no room to take it all on the plane. But fear not, for there's plenty of room in my CRV for everything I want to buy. This year, I'll also be spending one day at Universal Orlando (I won free tickets)...so I can just hop in the car and drive on over from my Disney Resort with ease.

So there you have it, a 14 hour drive for me each time I visit Walt Disney World. For me, its just one part of an exciting trip...I wouldn't change a thing!!!

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Epcot Passport

One of my favorite things to do in World Showcase is to get a Passport to take to all the countries. For those who may not know what I'm talking about, the Passport is sold in many of the shops along World Showcase. You take it to each country and they will stamp it and write a personal message to you in their language...don't worry, they'll tell you what it says.

I've got a Passport on virtually every trip, as I think it adds to the experience of visiting the many countries in Epcot. As you can see in the photo, the styles have changed over the years (pictured are Passports from 1993 and 2008), but the premise has remained the same. They include stickers for you to place on each page, as well as a spot to write the date and time, etc...

Passports are a fun way to remember special occasions as well, such as Honeymoons or other milestones. I also enjoy the Passport because it gives you a unique opportunity to have a conversation with the Castmembers from the different countries, and ask them questions and learn things (yes, you could do that anyway, but this just gives you one more reason).

So next time you're at Epcot, be sure to grab a Passport as you make your way around World Showcase Lagoon. Each one becomes a one-of-a-kind memento of a fantastic trip. As for me, I'll be getting one while at Epcot on my Birthday...so I'll literally have a Birthday Card from around the world. Cheers!!!

A Thrill From Chickapin Hill

If you want a thrill from high atop Chickapin Hill, be sure to outsmart Brer Fox and Brer Bear along the way...but whatever you do, please...please don't let'em throw ya into that briar patch. Actually, you'll be glad they did. If you're ready for the ride of your life, and a 5 story drop into a whole lot of water, this is the ride for you.

Splash Mountain is literally awash with thrills and excitement, with its many quick drops along the way to the big finale. The ride is full of singing characters and crafty hijincks as you and Brer Rabbit leave the briar patch on a quest of adventure. But don't forget, "you can't run from trouble, there ain't no place that far." Brer Fox and Brer Bear are chasing close behind and if you're not careful, they're gonna getcha!!!

This is one of the most popular rides at the Magic Kingdom, and with good reason. The ride lasts around 12 minutes, has singing characters throughout, five drops of varying heights and finishes with a big finale. The end scene is a sight to behold, as the 36 foot Showboat and rocks back and forth with its 12 audio-animatronics singing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah."

So the next time you're at the Magic Kingdom, this is an attraction not to be missed!!! Last year, I got an additional thrill, in the form of a Dream Fastpass given to a few of us lucky riders as we exited the attraction.

In case you wondered, this is my favorite attraction in all of Walt Disney World, it just doesn't get any better than this!!! Remember, its the truth, its actual, everything is satisfactual...have a Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Day!!!!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

While at Pop Century Resort, one of my favorite things to do is take a stroll down Memory Lane. No, I'm not sitting on a bench reminiscing about the past. Memory Lane is a walking path along the shores of Hourglass Lake that stretches from one side of the resort to the other...and its something you shouldn't miss.

As you walk along the path, you'll pass interesting signs. Each sign shows a year, along with interesting and notable things that happened, from 1950 through the 90s. So literally, if you walk the path and read each sign, you're walking down Memory Lane.

Along the way is the Generation Gap bridge, which will eventually connect Classic Years with Legendary Years. At this point, you may only cross halfway on the bridge, but from this point you can get some really good views (and photos) of Pop Century.

Also along the path, you'll find some very interesting items. My favorite is the giant Mr. and Mrs. Potato Heads standing guard. Be sure to take your camera and walk the path during the day and night, as the views change dramatically with the lighting. There are several other interesting objects just off the path as well; such as the Twister Board in the 70s section. Pop Century has little gems at every turn, so its hard not to spot something interesting.

Next time you stay at the Pop Century, take time to stroll Memory Lane and the rest of the resort as well, you'll find many things that make you smile. Cya there!!!

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Behind the Seeds

I want to fill you in on a hidden treasure of Epcot, called Behind the Seeds. For those who have ever ridden the Living with the Land boat ride and wanted to know more about how they do some of the things in the greenhouses, this tour is for you.

Behind the Seeds is a one-hour guided walking tour of the greenhouses in The Land. This tour lets you have a closer look at many of the environmentally friendly techniques used in the greenhouses. Guests may also sample a tomato from the tomato tree, as well as see how to make their very own hydroponically grown plants at home.

I took this tour a couple years ago and loved it. We could ask questions and take as many pictures as we wanted. Plus, we got to see many things that wasn't shown from the boat ride. We got to see how the integrated pest management worked, as well as some very interesting growing techniques inside the lab. The tour was a lot of fun and I'll have to go again someday. For those of you who have ever wondered about it, I would recommend everyone try it at least once.

You can make reservations for the tour by calling 1-407-WDW-TOUR and there may be discounts offered for Disney Visa, AP, DVC and AAA members, just be sure to ask. This is one of the lower priced tours and is quite affordable for most anyone.

The Romance of Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World has many things for many type of people. I want to touch on a couple of the more romantic spots in all of Walt Disney World, specifically the Polynesian and Beach Club Resorts.

The Poly, with its lure and romance of the islands, is one of the best places to catch a snuggle. This was the first resort to open at Walt Disney World, and echos Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. Hawaii was one of Walt's favorite places, and it shows in the theming of this resort.

Start the evening with a stroll on the beach at sunset, such a beautiful site. Then, share a hammock on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon, with the Castle as your backdrop. If you're lucky, you may catch Wishes and the Electrical Water Pageant. Either way, it will definitely be a very romantic evening.

The Beach Club Resort has its own romance as well, in many different ways. The Boardwalk is a short stroll around the lake, with many things for couples to do in the evenings. Once back at the Beach Club, have a stroll on the sandy shores, curl up in a chair and sip a drink with the one you love. Nothing speaks romance at night quite like Stormalong Bay, whether its sharing a lounge chair by the poolside or snuggling in a jacuzzi hidden away in the rocks of the lagoon. The night air is magical, with the windmill in the distance, there are lots of little romantic spots tucked all around Stormalong Bay.

No matter what your choice, there are plenty of romantic spots all over Walt Disney World, which is one of the many reasons so many couples choose to Honeymoon there. So plan a trip with the one you love and come see the romantic side of the most magical place on earth, you'll be very glad you did.

I'm Just Here for the Food ~ Flame Tree Barbecue

When you start thinking about Walt Disney World, food is one of the first things that comes to mind. There is so much to choose from, and so many good options that we often find ourselves sitting at home thinking about one of the meals we would really like to have.

One of those places is Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Its a counter service restaurant that often draws big crowds, and with good reason. Rather than indoors, the seating here is scattered around under shade of trees and canopies as you dine outdoors. Seldom does a meal conclude without visits from ducks as they wander about looking for crumbs, which isn't hard to find as most people will offer them little treats.

I prefer the smoked 1/2 Chicken, they give you plenty of food and its quite good. Another option is a half-slab of St. Louis Ribs or a Beef or Pork Sandwich....mmmm, is your mouth watering yet? All meals come with baked beans and a cornbread muffin and, since I'm on the dining plan, don't forget your Chocolate Cake or Key Lime Pie for desert!!!

Flame Tree is one of the many places I enjoy having lunch while at Walt Disney World, and with good reason, the food is quite good and not to be missed. Of course, they have their days...sometimes the chicken may be a little dry, but all-in-all, I still enjoy it. So how 'bout it? Care for some lunch next time you're at Animal Kingdom? A quick tip to help avoid crowds...try to go around 11:30 or so, before the noon crowd hits at lunchtime.

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Character Dining

Character dining is one of the many magical things to do at Walt Disney World. They help create so many long lasting memories that will carry with you for the rest of your life. Just think of it, having a nice meal with all of your favorite Disney characters coming to visit your table for pictures and autographs. My Father and I used to have a Character Breakfast each morning of our trip. We found that it truly gave us a magical start to a great Disney day.

Some of our favorites at the time were King Stephan's Banquet Hall (Now Cinderella's Royal Table), Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, Garden Grill, and Donald's Breakfastasauras. The photos I'm sharing with you here are of my Dad and I at the Garden Grill having the time of our lives.

Though breakfasts are the main option with characters, there are places that also offer dinner as well. If you recall in my Birthday post, I plan on having a Character Breakfast and Dinner to start and end my Birthday the Disney way.

Whatever you choose, be sure to bring your camera and capture each and every moment, you'll be glad you did. Many years later, when I look back at some of my photos, I have so many fond memories that pop into my head. We had such great times and these meals made them even better. On my YouTube page, I have three videos showing some of the Characters cutting up and joking around...showing us a great time.

So if you've never dined with Characters, give it a try the next time you're there. I suggest a Character Breakfast because it starts your day in a happy way. Its also a great chance to get lots of autographs and photos as well. So live it up, enjoy, and make plenty of lasting memories...I know I will on my Birthday!!!

A Magical Moment with Harry Holt

I thought I would reflect back on something very nice at Walt Disney World that I was lucky enough discover. I was at the Magic Kingdom back in 1994, browsing around Main Street, when I wondered into the Disneyana Store (I miss that place). It turned out to be perfect timing. A lady was sitting up a table and a sign that said an animator would be doing twelve sketches free in about three hours.

As it turns out, Harry Holt was coming to spend a few moments at the Disneyana and sign some sketches for a few fans. I hopped right in line and stood there for almost three hours. The Castmembers were very nice though and gave me a red card so my Dad and I could trade places, allowing the other to walk around Main Street. Once he arrived, we each were allowed to choose a sketch from the many Disney Animated films he did. I, of course, chose Lady and the Tramp and I still love it to this day.

Harry Holt was with the Walt Disney Company since 1936, where he worked on the development of Snow White. He left Disney after 20 years to work on projects such as the Flintstones and Tom and Jerry, then returning to Disney in the 1960s once again. He was responsible for sculpting and designing many of the characters and models for Walt Disney World, for rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Country Bears, Snow White, Peter Pan and the Haunted Mansion.

He passed away about ten years to the day that I met him, and though he is no longer with us, his creations will inspire people for years to come. I do remember how nice he was and how he enjoyed talking to his fans, it was a magical moment for me that I will forever remember.

Always keep an eye out when you’re walking around, for you never know who or what you may find that will create a lasting memory for you as well.

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ School Bread

Nothing makes a memory like a tasty treat in your favorite place. There's one in particular I'm thinking about right now, and it can be found at the Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe. Where is that you ask? If you find yourself at Epcot, make your way to Norway, enter the bakery and you're there. Once there, try the School Bread, you'll be glad you did.

I tried it for the first time on my last trip, in a rather funny moment. Normally, I don't like coconut in my food; however, this one is different. After being coaxed by a friend to try it, my comments were something like "I don't like coconut (took a bite), I really don't like coconut (another bite), no really I don't like coconut (another bite)". This continued until the School Bread was gone.

For those who don't know, School Bread is a sweet bread filled with vanilla custard and topped with a light glaze and shredded coconut. It’s a very nice treat if you need a bit of energy on a long day and counts as a snack credit on the dining plan. I know one thing for sure, on my Birthday trip to Epcot; School Bread is definitely on the menu for the day.

But now I have to ask...why didn't I ever get things like that when I was in school?

Come Fly With Me ~ Mission Space and Soarin'

My Father loved to fly. It made him feel free and provided a getaway from the hectic world below. It was his love of flying that would ultimately take his life, as he was killed in a helicopter accident nearly ten years ago. As I’ve said before, Disney was an annual trip for my Father and I, and since his passing, I often think about him when I experience new rides and attractions. As I ride something new, I’ll think about what he would say or how he would react. Two of those rides are Mission Space and Soarin’. There’s no doubt that he would have loved them both, as he loved flying. Each ride is dedicated to flight, but in different and thrilling ways.

Mission Space is a very high intensity ride, with lots of G-Forces. The first time I rode this, I could hear him sitting beside me as he gritted his teeth and moaned in delight. He would’ve been flying this thing from start to finish; just as I do each time I ride. In fact, I wish I could experience it as it was on opening day when it had even more Gs. The last time I rode, I actually did everything they warned not to do (closing eyes, looking right to left) and it never bothered me at all.

Soarin’ is a very free experience that puts you in open space as you fly over scenic beauty. He would be delighted at the sights and smells along the way, pointing at different things as we flew past and commenting on how free it made him feel. As we would exit, I could hear him say “how ‘bout that”, as he often would.

There are many other things, of course, that he would’ve enjoyed. Most of all, he would’ve enjoyed our time together, as we always did. Its that time that I miss, and though he is no longer with me as I travel there, I can always sense him walking alongside me, laughing and asking “where to next?”

So if you ever catch me at Epcot, all you have to do is ask, and you can come fly with me (and my Dad)!!!

A Look Back ~ Horizons

Today I take a look back at an attraction that was always a favorite, Horizons at Epcot. Horizons was a journey into the future, and really pulled together of all the themes of Future World. This attraction used communication, energy, transportation, creativity and technology to showcase a better life for all of humanity in the future.

Upon arriving, you find yourself in Futureport, a terminal of the future. Upon boarding your vehicle, you travel past scenes depicting thoughts and ideas of the future from the past, such as Jules Verne’s spaceship. After this whimsical vision of the future, guests are whisked away to twenty-first century living, which focus on quality of life for everyone.

Guests then view desert farms, travel with energy-efficient power, undersea cities and space colonies. My personal favorite is the orange grove of the future. I can almost smell the oranges now. You can actually still smell the oranges in Soarin’, though I’m not sure if this was an intentional nod to Horizons, or mere coincidence.

Before returning to the present, guests are given the option of choosing three modes of transportation, which include a personal submarine, a desert hovercraft or a space flight.

While Horizons has been replaced by Mission Space, which is an excellent ride, I’ll always remember this beautiful structure that once stood prominently in Future World. I’ll also always remember the theme…”If We Can Dream It, We Can Do It”.

A Few of My Favorite Things ~ Aloha Isle

I want to start a series of blogs about a few of the little things that can make your Walt Disney World vacation even more special. I've always noticed during my trips that it was usually something small that was most memorable. Some of the topics are things many people know about, but they are things that I've enjoyed time and time again as some of my favorite things.

I want to start with something many of you are probably quite familiar with, Aloha Isle and the famous Dole Whip. There are however some who are unfamiliar with this little treat. As you enter Adventureland, be sure to look to your right for the Aloha Isle counter, easy to find due to its constant long line. There are many options to choose from when you ask for a Dole Whip. You can get it in a cup or a float (in pineapple juice), in either pineapple or pineapple/vanilla swirl. Whichever you choose, you won't be disappointed. For those on the dining plan, the Dole Whip is a snack credit.

The Dole Whip is a refreshing treat on a hot day and something you'll want for a long time after your trip has ended. This cool treat has reached a cult like status among Walt Disney World fans and is often one of the first things on their list when they visit the Magic Kingdom. So the next time you find yourself in the land of Adventure, stop by the Aloha Isle and indulge in one of those little things that can add a tasty memory to your Walt Disney World vacation.

The Little Things We Cherish

This is a picture of some rock candy from Walt Disney World that is now ten years old as of this week. Why on earth would I have kept this for ten years? Well, this was the last thing my Father bought for me on our last trip to Walt Disney World. I still have the receipt as well, which is dated "March 24, 1999". That is exactly 3 months from the day he passed away.

These are the little things I cherish. Its something small that may not seem like much to the casual observer, but means the world to me. I keep this sealed in an airtight bag and will keep it always, as it is a constant reminder of the fun we had.

This is one of many "little things" that I have, and I wanted to share it with you. Our trips to Disney were some of the best times I ever had and I'm so glad I was able to have so many good times and lasting memories with my Dad in my favorite place. I still go every year knowing that there are more memories to make, and always knowing that he's watching and sharing in each of them.

Walt Disney World's 5th Gate ~ A Perspective

There have been a lot of rumors lately concerning the next big thing at Walt Disney World. Will it be a big attraction, a big ride or an entire land? Will we see a new country at Epcot soon, or will Beastly Kingdom finally make an appearance at Animal Kingdom, or maybe the Little Mermaid Attraction in Fantasyland? I too think about what's next, but I'm thinking about something on a grander scale, the fifth gate. There's no denying that Disney will eventually add yet another park in Florida, history has shown us that much. The debate is over what kind of park to expect. Rumors have flown about a Disney Villains park, or Disney's America...some even speculate that they're currently building the Night Kingdom in secrecy. I have an idea for the next park, and its one that already exists elsewhere and is wildly successful. I'm talking about DisneySea!

There are lots of reasons that DisneySea would be a welcome addition to Walt Disney World. For starters, they've already built it in Japan, which means they have the plans and layouts, plus they know what works and what doesn't. Additionally, the park has been extemely popular since it first opened.

When Universal Studios announced they were building a park in Orlando, Disney's CEO put Imagineers on a breakneck timetable to not only build a studio park, but to get it open before Universal's. The Disney-MGM Studios opened more than a year before Universal Studios and managed to grab the majority of their market share. Fast forward a few years and we see the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom, which has an African/Asian theme of wild animals and safaris. Does this sound familiar? Busch Gardens had used this theme in Tampa for many years. This leaves one park that Disney has yet to compete with, Sea World. I realize there are differences between the parks, as there are no live animals at DisneySea. The park is themed to nautical exploration, looking at the sea from a different perspective.

I think, given today's climate, Disney wants to make sure its next park is a sure thing, especially after having to completely re-theme California Adventure. DisneySea has proven itself as a popular park and Disney has seen what worked and what needed tweaking. Only time will tell, and rumors will continue to fly until something is officially announced....but for me, its DisneySea!!!

Epcot's Next E-Ticket?

I wanted to share some thoughts I've had concerning the future of Epcot. As you know, Epcot has been through a long cycle of renovations and new additions, but what does the future hold? What's the next E-Ticket attraction for this park and when? I propose the next big attraction will finally be a new country in World Showcase. I have a few reasons as to why I feel this way, as well as a little concept art to share.

Over the past few years, Future World has been reinvented, with nearly every pavilion undergoing massive refurbishments. Additionally, we've seen the development of three major new thrill rides as well, with Test Track, Mission Space and Soarin' added over the last few years. Given all the work that's been done, there isn't much left to do in Future World. Sure, there's always the Wonders of Life pavilion that's been closed for a few years, and they could always take another stab at Universe of Energy, but I don't see either of these as the next big ticket attraction.

Move across World Showcase to a large clearing between Germany and China and you have an obvious choice to finally see Switzerland. This country has been rumored for years, along with a few others, and rightfully so. This country would be the home of the Matterhorn Mountain, or a variation thereof and give guests a thrilling ride through the Swiss Alps. Imagine the view from Future World looking into World Showcase with the beautiful mountain in the background. It would provide similar vistas as Expedition Everest in the distance at Animal Kingdom.

Installing a thrill attraction in this area of the park would do a few things. First, it would bring more guests around World Showcase and into neighboring countries. Second, it would help better disperse crowds by having E-Ticket rides in different areas of the park, with Soarin' to the right, Mission Space/Test Track to the left and the Swiss Alps attraction in the back.

Disney's America

It was November 11, 1993 when it became official; Disney’s America would be the newest of Disney Theme Parks, located on a 3,000 acre site in Haymarket Virginia, near Washington DC. Just think of it, a theme park that celebrates America, its diversity, history, conflicts and struggles. It truly would have told the story of our nation as only Disney could tell. Unfortunately, it was met with much controversy due to its proximity with existing historic sites. Some believed Disney would attempt to “gloss over” the true history with a storybook version. Eventually, the plan was scrapped and abandoned altogether.

In a series of blogs, I plan to look not so much at the controversy, but at the original layout of the park, including the themed lands and attractions. My intent is to show what could have been, and what has since become of the Disney's America project.

Disney’s America was to have nine themed lands, each telling a different story of a different era of America. The nine lands included: Crossroads USA, Civil War Fort, Presidents Square, State Fair, Native America, We The People, Family Farm, Enterprise and Victory Field. In future blogs, I plan to touch on each of these themed lands, some of the attractions and even a few pieces of concept art that were released at the time.

Though the park was never built, some of the proposed rides, attractions and themed lands, were eventually built in some form in various Disney parks. A large part of the plans were eventually modified and used in Disney’s California Adventure. I’ll share those in future blogs as well, but for now I’ll leave you with this thought. According to the press release, Disney’s America could have opened as early as 1998, which would mean the park would have recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary. While its sad that we never got to see this become reality, as we all know, Disney never fully abandons a project. From time to time, they may revisit Disney’s America, and while the park itself may never be built, we may see some of the attractions appear at other parks in the years to come. Only time will tell.

D23 Special Gift

I just wanted to do a quick post to show my special gift from D23. Its a very large lithograph of Mickey that can be seen on page 54 of the Disney Twenty-Three magazine. The painting is the Mickey Mouse 80th Anniversary Portrait by Paul Felix. I'm going to definitely purchase a frame to keep it, and maybe put it in my office for a while.

Animal Kingdom ~ 11 Years Ago Today

It was 11 years ago today when I walked into the Polynesian Resort on a VERY early Monday morning. I had heard the rumors, so I simply said to the lady “I’d like to visit Animal Kingdom today”. Indeed it was the first day of Resort previews for Animal Kingdom. With passes in hand, we headed out the door. As we were riding over on the bus, the driver announced, “Congratulations, you guys are on the very first bus EVER into Disney’s Animal Kingdom”. So began a day of wonder, excitement and memories that I shall never forget.

It was a picture perfect day as we entered the park, with Cast members standing everywhere handing out maps and answering questions. I noticed early on that this would be a day of audition, where everything was unscripted and we were the first test subjects.

The first attraction was Kilimanjaro Safaris and it did not disappoint. The driver was very talkative as he chatted with us. One thing I noticed is how he would stop the vehicle periodically, or go slower than usual to let everyone truly soak in our experience.

Next we took the train over to Conservation Station and browsed around a bit before returning to Harambe and looking in a few of the shops. It was still very early in the morning, as the park opened around 7am, so we decided to find some breakfast. As we approached Dinoland, we decided to try Donald’s Breakfastasauras. I always loved this breakfast every since that first day. Maybe it was because we were there on their first day, or maybe it was the memories of my Father…but probably a little of both.

In Dinoland, we rode Countdown To Extinction, which is now known as Dinosaur. This ride has had many changes since its opening. That first day, it was quite dark inside and has since become a bit more visible inside (though still dark). Remember that Chester and Hester’s didn’t exist, nor did Asia, or even Its Tough to be a Bug.

We then boarded the Discovery River Boats, an attraction that only lasted about a year. The boats were not on a track and thus were difficult to navigate the river. I thought this ride was rather interesting and certainly better than walking. The driver made little jokes and we got to see Dragon Rocks. If you’re crossing the bridge into Camp Minnie-Mickey, take a look off the right side of the bridge and you’ll see the rocks. During the time of the Discovery River Boats, the rocks actually blew fire, thus their name.

This is just a little peek at what we got to experience on that very first day at Animal Kingdom. Many memories were made, as this was one of those magical moments that make Walt Disney World so special. The best thing about this memory is that it included my Dad, who passed away the following year. I will truly miss him, but will always remember and cherish the many memories we shared at the World. As I continue to return each and every year, I create more memories, more magical moments and experience new and exciting things. I also know that I continue to share each of those memories with my Dad, as he is always walking by my side.

A Birthday to Remember ~ Disney Style

This year, I get to celebrate my birthday at my favorite place, Walt Disney World. I wanted to share my general plans and things that should make it a very memorable birthday. As there may be slight changes in the plans as time goes on, I'll make small edits to this blog if needed.

Our actual package doesn't start until the day after my birthday, so for the first few nights, we'll be staying in a cabin at Fort Wilderness. Think of it, TWO Disney Resorts on one trip!!!

The day starts with a Character Breakfast at Cape May in the Beach Club Resort. What better way to start a birthday celebration than having breakfast with some of my favorite characters. I'll also get my birthday cupcake and card signed by everyone there.

After breakfast, its off to Epcot, where I will have free admission on my birthday. I'll also pick up a birthday button as well. From there, its off to get a Passport at World Showcase to do a "Birthday Passport around the world". I usually do this on every trip, but this one will be special since its on my birthday!!!

As we're making our way around World Showcase, I can't wait to play at least one round of Kim Possible in World Showcase...but who are we kidding, its going to be more than one round for sure.

After saving the world a time or two, even the best secret agent must stop for lunch. The perfect birthday lunch will be found at Beaches & Cream back at the Beach Club. A chocolate malt and grilled cheese will make my day. Sorry, even though its my birthday, I won't be having the kitchen sink...its just too much. After lunch, we're going inside to have a chat with Art the greeter in the Beach Club lobby. He's such a nice guy and I'll have to have him sign my passport and birthday card as well...not to mention posing for a few photos.

After lunch, its back to Epcot to maybe save the world again (I told you it would be addictive). I'm hoping I can spot the Candy Lady in Japan, as I missed seeing her the past two trips. I also like walking around the shops in World Showcase and seeing all the different things from other countries. Of course, we'll also make our way to Future World for some of the attractions there as well. I will also drop the the Disney Visa Meet 'n Greet to have some birthday pictures taken with my favorite characters. I just want to enjoy my birthday, stroll along, take pictures and talk to people in the countries....and have orange slushies of course!!!

After a day in the park, its off to a character Dinner at 1900 Park Fare. If the day starts with characters, it has to end with them, especially on my birthday. I must get more autographs on my card and yet another birhday cupcake. This is an old favorite, so I look forward to doing this if I can.

Sounds like a long day huh? Its going to be a great day full of excitement, mystery, good friends and good food. Its hard to believe this is actually BEFORE we begin our package...a "pre-trip", if you will...the trip before the trip.

I would like to stop and point out that in all my planning process. My plans generally involve where to eat and unique things to do, as oppose to ride and attraction hopping.

D23 ~ Even More for Me!!!

I just recieved another package from D23. This one had a copy of the magazine, as well the certificate, a letter from Bob Iger and a small D23 decal. The decal is NOT the special gift though, since the letter states it will arrive shortly.

The magazine is very nice indeed and all the good things that have been said about it are so true. This is something I would definately sit out on a coffee table. I also think the certificate is nice as well. It has all the major and minor characters around the border, including Mr. Toad (haven't seen him in a while).

So far, so good, now I'm waiting anxiously to see what the special gift is all about. It keeps saying its from the Disney Archives, so it has my mind wondering.

D23 For You and Me!!!

Well, my D23 card is now here. I was expecting a full kit, but apparantly they're shipping everything separately. The card itself is plastic, similar to a credit card, with your name and member ID number on the back. It was attached to a letter welcoming you to the club. I look forward to recieving the rest of my items in the mail, especially the special gift.

I've also heard that several of the D23 items have been selling out, especially some of the pins. I'm not sure if they plan to make more or if they plan to make different items to replace the ones that sell out...only time will tell.

I've posted a picture of the welcome letter for everyone to see. I can't wait to see what arrives next.

Animal Kingdom's Asia ~ A Personal Connection

On March 23, 1998, Walt Disney World began offering resort guests the opportunity to preview Animal Kingdom, and I was fortunate enough to be on the very first bus. As a result, I was able to see the park in its infancy, as well as experience some attractions that no longer exist (such as the Discovery River Boats). There were a few attractions that were still unfinished, such as “Its Tough to be a Bug”, as well as Asia, which was to be the second phase of Animal Kingdom. Asia would open the following year on March 18, 1999, and I was there on that day as well. That day shares a more personal meaning for me though, since it was also my Father’s birthday, and would turn out to be his last (he passed away in June of that year). As a result, Asia has a more personal connection for me, and memories I will always treasure.

Asia is set in the fictional kingdom of Anandapur complete with crumbling ruins and temples, as well as a maharajah's palace. Asia is also the home to a few thrilling attractions.
Kali River Rapids is themed as a rafting expedition along the Chakranadi River, courtesy of "Kali Rapids Expeditions". This attraction also sends a message of conservation, as it deals with illegal logging and habitat destruction. For those who are wondering, you WILL get wet on this ride. For those who don't wish to ride, you can stand on the bridge near the exit, take control of a squirting elephant and soak a few unsuspecting riders.

The Maharajah Jungle Trek is a wildlife trail themed as ruins of an ancient palace in Anandapur Royal Forest of Southeast Asia. This attraction offers encounters with animals such as Komodo dragons, fruit bats, tapirs and tigers.

The most recent addition to Asia is the thrilling Expedition Everest, and has become a park favorite. On this attraction, riders board refurbished steam trains as they travel to the base camp of Mount Everest, using a shortcut that passes through the "forbidden mountain" where they encounter the legendary yeti.

Today, I can wish Animal Kingdom’s Asia and my Father a very happy birthday. It’s fitting that Anandapur, is Sanskrit for “place of all delight”, for I also believe that perfectly describes the place my Father now dwells forever.

Goodbye Spoodles, Hello Kouzzina

A few days ago, a story in the Orlando Sentinel mentioned Cat Cora opening a restaurant at Walt Disney World. Suddenly, the story vanished without a trace leaving some of us scratching our heads. This morning came the official announcement that Cat Cora will team up with Disney to open a new restaurant at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort called Kouzzina, which will replace Spoodles (sorry to all you Spoodles fans). The cuisine at Kouzzina, which is Greek for "kitchen" and pronounced "koo-zee-nah", will feature Greek and Mediterranean cuisine and is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2009.

A Little Patch of Heaven on Main Street U.S.A.

Here's an example of those little "Magical Moments" that are easy to miss, but can really make your day. We were strolling down Main Street at the Magic Kingdom and I noticed the Dapper Dans were standing just up the street from us. As we came closer, I noticed a group of four people singing to them. Turns out, they were a Barbershop Quartet and, while on vacation, stopped to sing a song to the Dapper Dans. I later learned that this group were the silver medalists at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s international quartet contest.

Luckily, my friend had a camera that could record video. Above is the result of our little magical moment that we could have easily missed. So always be on the lookout for little things that can make your vacation truely a once in a lifetime event. Afterall, when you're in Walt Disney World, a little sprinkle of Pixie Dust is never far away!!!

D23 ~ Loyalty and Opinions

It seems that D23 has created two groups of people, those who saw some value and joined and those who are angered because it wasn’t what they expected. I’ve seen people with expectations that D23 should have been a loyalty program for the theme parks and this puzzles me for several reasons. First and foremost, this club was meant to be all things Disney, not just for the parks. Second, D23 has made it quite clear that they are not finished yet and new things will be added and offered. While I totally understand that D23 isn’t what some people desire, it saddens and disheartens me to hear the sheer amount of negativity that I’ve heard over the past few days.

Some have said they want nothing short of a loyalty program…a free night after you stay 20 nights…things along those lines. This sort of program would once again only benefit the local crowd who live close enough to visit many times each year. Most people who live further away would not find any use in such a program, especially the international visitors. Many die hard fans, such as myself, visit a week (10 days in my case) a year and are just as dedicated as anyone else. It would do most of us little good to pay $75 for such a program when we could only use the benefits every 2-3 years or so. I would much prefer small discounts, early previews of things before the general public, etc. Those who live close enough already receive several perks that many of us aren’t even entitled to, such as Tables In Wonderland for example. D23 is and was always meant for ALL fans, not just the ones who live close enough to visit 10 times a year.

I think many have been too quick to judge and have overreacted at something just a few days old. Particularly, a couple things bother me. I notice a disturbing trend in how some state their opinion. Stating things like “This is a slap in the face of ALL Disney fans” implies fact rather than opinion. While it may be a slap in YOUR face, it’s not a slap in mine and I’m most certainly a Disney fan. I was also disheartened that the one of the biggest arguments against D23 concerned the expensive items, with quotes like “I have to pay $75 for the privilege of buying an $850 pen”. In fact, the Executive items DO NOT nor have they EVER required any membership whatsoever; this includes the infamous pen as well as a host of other items. They were posted on the shopping site before the club even launched.

Now, a prediction; I’ve always said that discounts were on the way, and they would most definitely be a part of D23 in some form or fashion. I’ve already begun to hear from reliable sources that there are several things coming, including discounts on merchandise, early previews of shows, movies, rides, etc before the general public and much more. I firmly believe that when all is said and done, many of those who were so negative early on will suddenly forget all the words of anger they posted for everyone to see. I’ve noticed in my life that most of the people who are rewarded the most are those who get in on the ground floor. I’ve personally missed several opportunities as a result of not doing so. However, this time will be different, at least for me.

In the end, everyone has a right to form their own opinion and choose whether or not to join as nothing can nor will ever please everyone. Just remember to always enjoy the magic, that's what matters most!!!

A Book?

I thought I would begin my very first blog entry with a pondering. Over the past few months, many friends have told me that I should write a book; specifically, a Walt Disney World Guidebook. I’ve been asked how I know things; how I seem to always be in the right place at the right time. How was I on the first bus into Animal Kingdom on the very first day of soft-opening? How was it that, on opening day, I knew where everything was, without a map in hand? How is it that I always avoid the crowds, find short lines to the most popular rides and rarely even need to use a fastpass? While some people post about having difficulty getting the dining reservations they desire, they always question how I got everything I wanted, including multiple times at popular places like Le Cellier in a single trip. While I know some people who purchase crowd charts or secret tips on how to beat the crowds; I usually wave to them from the front of the line. (see picture below: first in line for Toy Story Mania)

One of my best friends jokingly said it was something akin to Bill Paxton in “Twister” running dirt through his hands, as he always seemed to know where and when the next one was going to strike. Well…yes, it’s a little like that actually. I just get a “feeling” of how things are on a particular day and follow what I feel. I actually got to experience it from the outside-in on my last trip. My best friend commented that he wanted to ride the train upon arrival to the Magic Kingdom. Having a feeling that we should get to Splash Mountain, and fast, I thought “what better time than now?” Turns out, upon exiting Splash Mountain, we were given Dream Fastpasses for the rest of the day….right place, right time.

For the record, I’ve never actually read an existing Guidebook; nor have I given any of them much more than a glance. Upon flipping through them and seeing the “hot tips”, “best kept secrets” or “things they don’t want you to know”, I don’t see anything new. Mostly, it seems that the books just re-word and re-publish the same old tips from year-to-year. There is an inherent problem with the so called “rules” of gauging crowd levels. One common tip is if a park, Epcot for example, has Extra Magic Hours the night before, you should go to that park the next morning and the crowds will be low. The problem is that once enough people use that tip, everyone will go to Epcot that morning and it will be crowded. It becomes a self-created prophecy.

Here’s my problem. How do I go about putting years and years of pure instinct on paper? How do I explain “feelings” and “hunches” and how do I present information in a distinctly different way than all the other books? In a sense, how do I provide new tips that have almost always worked for me, when to use them and when they apply? I suppose I’ll ponder these things for a while and, if I ever figure out how, will eventually put some words on paper.

Until that time, what better way to get my juices flowing than a blog? Maybe this will help me prepare for what’s to come…maybe not. Either way, I’ve enjoyed writing my first blog ever. Enjoy The Magic!!!
